7 laps, 1.30h racing Time
Second place, 5 sec behind Nino Schurter
It was my first cross country race on a hardtail since Olympics Sydney 2000! Ok this time it was not just a hardtail. I have chosen our Stumpjumper 29er. 8.1kg, super responsive and fast rolling especially with Renegade S-Works tires.
The bike only arrived with Fedex the day before, when I actually was almost out the door with my Epic 26er. I quickly went back, and build it together (it was already raced tuned by Benno though). I was impressed how quick that thing was accelerating, so I thought I will give it a go for the race.
Cross Country really changed over the last 3 years. The races are shorter, the speed never brakes down in the front and we are sprinting full gas on and off for 1.30h. A super light, stiff bike is highly required!
The Saturdays race course was very fast with asphalt towards the woods, a longer climb and fast back to the finish.
Nino and myself be already broke away in lap 3 and 4 but be caught by a small group again. Finally after we two also raced on the flat we were by ourself, unfortunately myself as well for the last 5min but not in the lead. On the very top of the last climb Nino had those 5 sec faster legs. I just could not close it on the flat any more...
But all in all I was happy with my performance and it felt great to battle for the win.
