118km, 2’900meters elevation gain, 4.57hrs
First Place, 13sec ahead of Christoph Soukup

It was not to fun to wake up at "6 o clock" in the morning. It was raining, cold and windy…But with Silvio Bundi we were still joking, while he was changing to very big knob tires. I saved this energy, and kept my Specialized Fast Track SLK (super low knobs) on the wheels. I only changed my rear aluminium rotor to steel, because with the mud, the brake pads on aluminium rotors wear down too fast.

Before the start we spoiled ourselves with good espresso in a bar, but after that the easy fun was over and we had to move to the line!

For the first half of the race I felt great, and with some attacks we were only 3 riders left, but got caught 2 times, because we took wrong turns. Not only our mistakes as the marshals just sat next to trees and did not say a word.
Finally, Saukup, Milaz and I rode for the title and that is where I started to feel so bad. My legs felt like they were dipped in a freezer. Saukup pushed the pace hard and I was barely hanging on for 1.5hrs, but then I was dead both physically and mentally.
I could not believe when Saukup came into sight with 3kms to the finish. I had to clean my glasses to really fully believe it! Naturally this gave me a big adrenaline boost, and in the last downhill I passed him with just 500m to go! It felt like winning the XC World Cup in 2003, when I turned into the stadium aria, but then it was hot and dry.
