6 Laps, 2.18hrs,
6th Place, 1.08min off winner Julien Absalon
(Report by Team Manager Bobby Behan)
Men’s Race: An unbelievable run of hard luck for Susi and that World Championships Title still eludes him
The title says it all. Christoph was definitely geared up, prepared and really committed to success today, but one cannot control everything.
With the pre race favourites Absalon, Hermida and Christoph all looking at each other in the opening stages of the six lap race, it allowed Swiss man Florian Vogel to make a break in the races opening stages, which he held until midway through the second lap. At this stage the big guns were all lining to test one another’s legs, but two of the key favourites suffered major problems.
On lap three following a crash Hermida was forced to stop to fix a cracked forked thus diminishing his chances of success. Hermida was a strong force this year, but unfortunately today was not his day.
Meanwhile my heart went out to Christoph, who was looking so strong throughout these opening laps. His shoe caught a tree root on the downhill section of lap three. As a result the binding system on his shoe broke resulting in him having to ride the entire climb to the feed zone with an open shoe. In the feed he lost over one minute getting the shoe repaired and at this stage he was back in 20th position, about 1 minute 30 seconds adrift. Always one never to give up Susi fought back to the chasers, but Absalon had already made his move and it would take a miracle to get Susi back to the front.
Absalon went on to dominate the final laps to take his fourth World Title in a row, which is a new record. Christoph’s fellow countrymen Ralf Naf produced a very strong final lap to take second while the other Swiss man Florian’s Vogels early attacks paid off with a bronze medal. Christoph finished up in sixth position. Naturally, he was very disappointed, but Susi is always one to look ahead and will be aiming to make amends in the future.
