5.5laps, 2.06hrs
3rd Place, 1.48min down to winner Jose Hermida

Racing in Houffalize is just the best! With, so many spectators, the small village has a great character, good course and believe it or not over all the years I have raced here always with nice weather.

I knew that I was in good shape, but before the first World Cup you never know if the “turbo charger” has the last 5% to win the big ones. There is always a very big hype at the beginning of the season, and everybody wants to show off and prove his own fitness. This whole package, plus the very steep start climb made racing very hard and there was no rest on the 15min start loop. I was riding top ten right behind Absalon. Coming into the first lap, the crazy pace started to slow down a little bit, and that was when I cut my tire with a sharp something… As a result I had to ride slowly to the tech zone which was not far away but my wheel change took forever.

I restarted at around 40th position! I lost my spirit but still pedalled hard and steady, not really realising how many riders I was passing. Suddenly I raced for 3rd together with Roel Paulissen. This brought a big smile to my face, since I packed my after race bag for podium circumstances ;-) and after all I was very happy that I could make use of it especially with such a huge podium crowd!

All in all this 3rd place is one of my better starts to the World Cup season. It looks like with Hermida, Absalon and I, nothing has changed in the top riders compared to last season.
