120kms, 5000meters Elevation Gain
5.55hrs, First Place, 7min. ahead of Thomas Frischknecht
The Swiss Bike Masters is one of the biggest Marathon Classics on the calendar.
I rode it in 1994 as Junior in the short distance, and looked big time up to the guys who rode the big loop and especially to the fast ones. Now I am proud to be in the "golden book" of the winners as well!
I did not feel great to start at 6.35am, but after 2hrs, after the first long descent, I had the race spirit I needed to break away the for the first time up the Madrisa hill
I never took any risks in the downhills, and coming down to the tourist resort of Klosters we were a group of 3 again, including Marathon World Champ, Thomas Frischknecht.
My mountain goat abilities -especially in the very steep technical uphills- made the big difference. There I gained most of the time from my pursuers.
But also I think the 10cm of my Epic suspension kept me out of trouble in the super long, steep downhills, and I saved a lot of energy. These downhills were very tough, I was very glad that my freeride trip built me up some extra forearm strength!
I am a rider who does not need to be fed with a lot of energy, even during such a long race. I probably ate 5 small Sponser gels, one Sponser Cereal Bar, and drank 2.5 litres of Sponser Long Engery fluid. By the way, I also had to stop 4 times to pee...
