One big start loop, plus 5laps
2.22hrs, 6.53min down on winner Julien Absalon
I kinda felt it the whole week, that it would be a muddy Sunday, where you have to run a lot during the race.
Most of the course was newly built in the woods and like this it was so soft, with no rolling at all, even in normal conditions. The problem is that the soil here around Spa is very swamp-like, and I think it is never dry here.
Like this I do not have any understanding of why the UCI and the organiser can not get their butts kicked and try to build a rideable wet course even if the chance of rain is huge. By the way the whole week it rained on and off every day!
Here we started on the Formula 1 race track, and the road was just too wide. On the first climb, right after the start, the guys from behind -under the draft of the front starters- rode very fast into the hill... and then the crashing started... But I just did not have it up there, which I thought was no problem, because on the long following straight I was always positive to still have the chance to move up, before going into the big deep mud... But I was blocked the whole time and I found myself riding around 100th going into the first trail!
More or less, I was waiting and cruising around for 2 laps, and then I started to move up.
Each time that I got close to top 5 I suffered a flat rear tyre - twice in lap 3 and 5. I had to run or kind of ride for 10mins to the technical zone where my wheel was changed again.
Other than that, my Epic bike worked awesomely. I felt so safe over all the wet roots and digging through the mud, as never before. The rear suspension travel gave me the extra safety I needed to have less pressure on the front wheel.
By the way, after the race my bike was almost 13kg! More then 3.5kg of mud on it!
With my 7th place today I lost many points for the overall, since Julien won again. I really need lots of luck and good energy in my legs so that I can win the overall title.
By the way, today we are leaving by ferry for Fort William in Scotland. I wanted to ride my bike outside today, but it is raining again...
